Description
Queen Gimnax has ordered the reclamation of the northern lands, and as a cartographer in her royal service, the duty of mapping this vast wilderness falls to you. In Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale, you are sent into the unknown to claim territory for the Kingdom of Nalos. Your success is measured by your reputation, which increases as you meet the specific demands set forth by the Queen's official edicts. However, the wilderness is not empty; the Dragul contest your every claim with their own outposts. You must draw your lines with precision to reduce their influence and secure the greatest share of the territory for the crown. The cartographer who has earned the most reputation stars by the end of the year will be declared the greatest in the kingdom.
The gameplay unfolds over four distinct seasons, from the fresh hope of Spring to the final tally of Winter. Each turn, a card is revealed showing a specific terrain type and shape that all players must draw onto their individual map sheets. The challenge lies in spatial management; you must fit forests, villages, water, and farmsteads into your grid to satisfy the Queen's shifting priorities. Because the scoring edicts change with each season, a strategy that works in the Summer might be less effective by the time Autumn arrives. This creates a dynamic puzzle where you must constantly weigh immediate points against long-term board positioning to maximise your reputation before the year concludes.
Interaction takes a surprising turn with the introduction of ambush cards. When a monster card is drawn, you pass your map to an opponent, who then draws the dangerous Dragul influence onto your territory in the most inconvenient spot possible. This "flip-and-write" mechanic ensures that players are always engaged with one another, rather than just solving a solo puzzle in isolation. Cartographers is highly scalable, accommodating anything from a single solo player to a large group of one hundred, making it a versatile choice for any gathering. With its beautiful fantasy artwork and deeply rewarding mechanical loop, it offers a satisfying creative outlet combined with a sharp, competitive edge.
- Strategic Flip-and-Write Mechanics: Every player uses the same revealed cards to create a unique map, rewarding clever spatial planning and foresight.
- Seasonal Scoring Edicts: Adapt your strategy as Queen Gimnax changes her priorities across four rounds, ensuring a fresh challenge in every game.
- Interactive Ambush System: Disrupt your rivals' plans by drawing monsters directly onto their maps, adding a layer of direct competition and tactical blocking.
- Exceptional Scalability: Perfectly suited for solo play or massive groups, with no limit on the number of participants who can join the mapping expedition.
- Rich Fantasy Theme: Set in the acclaimed Roll Player universe, featuring evocative illustrations and a compelling narrative of kingdom expansion.
