If your child has come home buzzing about Pokémon cards, or you’ve spotted a stack of them on the kitchen table, you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. The Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) is one of the most popular card games in the world, and the good news is it’s much easier to learn than it looks. Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

What Do You Need to Play?

To play your first game, all you need is:

Two Pokémon TCG decks (each containing 60 cards)
A coin or dice (for deciding who goes first)
Something to track damage (damage counters or coins)
A flat surface to play on!

The easiest way to get started is with a Pokémon TCG Battle Academy or a ready-to-play Trainer Kit. These come with two pre-built decks and a guide, so you can jump straight in.

The Three Types of Cards

Every Pokémon TCG deck uses three types of cards:

Pokémon Cards – Your fighters. Each has HP (hit points) and attacks.
Energy Cards – These power up your Pokémon’s attacks. You attach them to your Pokémon during your turn.
Trainer Cards – Special cards that let you draw extra cards, heal your Pokémon, or disrupt your opponent.

How a Game Works

The goal is simple: knock out your opponent’s Pokémon to collect Prize Cards. The first player to collect all six of their Prize Cards wins! Here’s how a typical turn goes:

Draw a card from the top of your deck.
Do things! Play Trainer cards, attach an Energy card to one of your Pokémon, or evolve a Pokémon.
Attack with your Active Pokémon (the one in front) using an attack from its card.
Your turn ends. Now it’s your opponent’s go!

When your opponent’s Pokémon takes enough damage to run out of HP, it’s knocked out and you take a Prize Card. Keep battling until one player claims all six!

Top Tips for New Players

Start with a pre-built deck rather than building your own; it’s much less overwhelming.
Read each Pokémon’s card carefully; the attack cost, damage, and any special effects are all listed clearly.
Don’t forget weaknesses! Some Pokémon take double damage from certain types (e.g. Water beats Fire).
